If you are moving down from the Northeast and quietly worried you are leaving real pizza and a proper bagel behind, take a breath. Finding authentic New York food near Charlotte is easier than most transplants expect, and a lot of it is clustered right here in South Charlotte, where a huge share of the newcomers come from New York and New Jersey. I get asked this constantly by relocating buyers, so I built the map I wish someone had handed me: the pizzerias, bagel shops, delis, Italian bakeries, and butchers that New Yorkers and Jersey folks actually vouch for.
Every spot below was checked to confirm it is currently open, well reviewed, and has a real Northeast connection, whether that is an owner who grew up in Brooklyn or Long Island or a kitchen turning out the exact thing you miss from home. When a place is great but not literally New York owned, I say so plainly.

The Short Answer: Authentic New York Food Near Charlotte
The Short Answer
Steve Jarrell of The Longleaf Group tracks the best authentic New York food near Charlotte in the South Charlotte suburbs, where the strongest transplant-verified picks are Tony’s Big Pizza in Ballantyne (Brooklyn brothers), Emilio’s Pizza Kitchen in Fort Mill (New York and New Jersey owners), Poppyseeds Bagels in Matthews (a Long Island family), and Holy Cannoli in Waxhaw, based on current ownership, reviews, and business status verified in August 2026.
Quick picks by craving:
- NY slice: Tony’s Big Pizza (Ballantyne), Emilio’s (Fort Mill), Empire (Indian Land).
- Kettle-boiled bagels: Poppyseeds Bagels (Matthews), Tega Cay Gourmet Deli (Tega Cay).
- Cannoli and cookies: Holy Cannoli (Waxhaw).
- Hoagies and cheesesteaks: Lee’s Hoagie House (Ballantyne).
- House-made Italian sausage: New York Butcher Shoppe (Indian Land), Enzo’s Italian Market (Stallings).
Here is the honest lay of the land. You will not find one single block that recreates Arthur Avenue or a Jersey boardwalk, but the individual pieces are all here, and several are genuinely excellent. The pizza and bagel scenes are the strongest, because that is what transplants demand first and what a few New York owners came here to build. The Italian bakery and butcher side is smaller but real. If you know where to go, you can eat like you never left, and most of these spots sit within about 25 minutes of Ballantyne.
One note on how I vetted this. I confirmed each business is open as of August 2026, checked that reviews are strong, and looked for a real Northeast tie. Where a place is beloved but the ownership is not literally from New York or New Jersey, I flag it as New York style rather than New York owned, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Where to Get Real New York Style Pizza Near Charlotte
For real New York style pizza near Charlotte, the transplant favorites are Tony’s Big Pizza in Ballantyne, run by Brooklyn brothers since the 1980s, and Emilio’s Pizza Kitchen in Fort Mill, owned by a Syracuse-born pizzaiolo who learned the craft in New Jersey. Both pass the fold test: a thin, pliable slice you can bend in half without the tip flopping off.
Pizza is the first test every transplant runs, so start here. This is the core of authentic New York food near Charlotte, and the South Charlotte suburbs punch above their weight for a real New York style pizza.
Tony’s Big Pizza, Ballantyne (Brooklyn owned)
This is the one I send Brooklyn expats to first. Brothers Vinny, Mario, and Tony were making New York style pizza in Brooklyn before they brought it to the Carolinas in the 1980s, and the Ballantyne shop at 14027 Conlan Circle turns out huge, foldable slices that reviewers who grew up on it call the real thing. It holds a 4.4 star Google rating and is a dependable weeknight slice. See the menu and locations at Tony’s Big Pizza.
Emilio’s Pizza Kitchen, Fort Mill (New York and New Jersey owned)
If you want the clearest Northeast pedigree on this list, it is Emilio’s. Owners Ray and Megan Cariseo are New York transplants: Ray was born in Syracuse and learned to make pizza in New Jersey just outside Manhattan, and Megan was born in Rochester with family from Buffalo. The Fort Mill shop at 5527 Arden Mill Drive serves classic New York style pies plus real Buffalo wings, with a comfortable bar and TVs, and the couple opened a second location in Tega Cay in early 2026. Details at Emilio’s Pizza Kitchen.
Empire Pizza, Indian Land (New York style)
For the Indian Land and Fort Mill side of the state line, Empire Pizza at 1218 Rosemont Drive in Indian Land is the go-to New York style slice, with a crisp, bubbly crust and the proper flop. Locals give it consistent nods for a quick, satisfying slice and wings, with more than 120 reviews on the major review sites. I list it as New York style rather than New York owned, but it scratches the itch.
Finale Pizza, Ballantyne (New York style)
Finale, on Lancaster Highway in the Ballantyne area, is a newer favorite that lands high on a lot of local best-slice lists for its New York style pies and pasta. It runs a fast, counter-order format rather than full table service, so it is a grab-a-slice spot more than a sit-down dinner. Good crust, good sauce. See Finale Pizza.
The Best New York Style Bagels in South Charlotte
The most authentic New York bagels near Charlotte are at Poppyseeds Bagels in Matthews, kettle-boiled by a Long Island family, and at Tega Cay Gourmet Deli on the South Carolina side. The grocery-store freezer case does not count, and you know it.
The good news is that South Charlotte has a genuine kettle-boiled bagel scene, and it is anchored by a real Long Island family. This is where authentic New York food near Charlotte gets personal for a lot of transplants, especially around Matthews and Weddington.
Poppyseeds Bagels, Matthews (Long Island owned)
This is the standard-bearer. Owner Kim Porto is a transplant from Suffolk County, Long Island, who grew up in her family’s bagel deli in Selden, New York, and she makes everything the traditional way: boiled, then baked, in more than a dozen flavors. You also get the full experience, from whitefish salad to black-and-white cookies and coconut macaroons. It is at 1311 Chestnut Lane in Matthews and has served the Matthews, Weddington, and Sun Valley area for years. Visit Poppyseeds Bagels.
Tega Cay Gourmet Deli, Tega Cay (New York and Long Island style)
On the South Carolina side near Fort Mill, the Tega Cay Gourmet Deli is the closest thing to a New York or Long Island style sit-down bagel and deli shop in the region, according to regulars. Owner Dan and his team are known for fast, friendly service, New York style bagels, and deli sandwiches and salads. It is a reliable weekend breakfast if you live in Fort Mill, Tega Cay, or Indian Land, and it comes up again and again on Tripadvisor and Nextdoor as the area’s most authentic bagel stop.

Once the pizza and bagel boxes are checked, the next thing transplants chase is a real Italian pastry case: cannoli filled to order, black-and-white cookies, rainbow cookies, and the St. Joseph pastries that show up in March.
Holy Cannoli, Waxhaw
Holy Cannoli, a newer downtown Waxhaw bakery at 201 West South Main Street, is the one transplants rave about. It has a smaller review count than the long-running pizza and bagel anchors on this list, but the reviews it has are strong. Reviewers describe the pastries as just as good as the shops back in the Northeast, and more than one has written that it is where they finally found St. Joseph pastries they had not tasted since leaving New York. It has grown from a small counter into a cafe next door serving cannoli, espresso, and lunch paninis. See Holy Cannoli.

Hoagies, Subs, and Italian Delis
Jersey folks, this section is for you. The line between a New York hero and a South Jersey hoagie is a religious matter, and South Charlotte finally has a real contender.

Lee’s Hoagie House, Ballantyne (Philadelphia institution)
Lee’s Hoagie House has been a Philadelphia staple since 1953, and its Ballantyne location brings the real hoagie and cheesesteak to South Charlotte. The signature Lee’s South Philly stacks prosciutto, Genoa salami, and capicola, and the Ballantyne spot has a sit-down feel with a patio and TVs. This is Philadelphia and South Jersey rather than New York, but for anyone raised on a proper hoagie or a Wawa run, it is home. More at the local coverage of the Ballantyne opening.
Italian Markets and Butchers for House-Made Sausage
The quiet secret of eating Northeast at home is the market: the place with the good sausage, the sharp grating cheese, the cured meats, and the fresh mozzarella. Two spots near South Charlotte cover it.
New York Butcher Shoppe & Wine Bar, Indian Land
This Indian Land shop is a full-service butcher and wine bar that makes its sausage in-house and carries premium cuts, cheeses, and a rotating seafood case, with a small bar to sit and sip. The New York Butcher Shoppe is a Northeast-rooted brand rather than a single New York owner, but it is the most convenient real butcher for the Ballantyne, Fort Mill, and Indian Land corridor. See New York Butcher Shoppe Indian Land.
Enzo’s Italian Market, Stallings
Just past Matthews in Stallings, at 4420 Potter Road, Enzo’s Italian Market is the old-school spot for house-made Italian sausage, sauces, cheeses, and baked goods, with a loyal following and a 4.5 star rating. Founder Enzo LoRe stepped back in spring 2025 for his health after 13 years, and the market was bought by Rania and Greg Tigani, who learned the recipes from Enzo’s mother, so the sausage and the sauce carried through the handoff. Details at Enzo’s Italian Market.
For the deeper backstory on how this scene formed, Charlotte historian Tom Hanchett has written about the region’s Northern transplant foodways, including the New York bagel scene in Union County. It is a good reminder that this is a real, decades-in-the-making community, not a fluke.
Where NY and NJ Transplants Watch Their Teams
Food is only half of feeling at home. The other half is Sunday, and you are not about to start rooting for a different team. There is a real New York sports crowd here, mostly gathered a short drive into the city rather than in South Charlotte itself.
For the Giants, The Local at 105 East 5th Street uptown hosts the New York Giants Fans in Charlotte group and ranks as the top Giants bar in town. Jets fans gather at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille at 911 East Morehead Street with the Charlotte Jets Fans group. For baseball, Tavern on the Tracks at 1411 South Tryon is a known Yankees watch spot. None are in Ballantyne, but all are an easy 20 to 25 minute drive from South Charlotte, and they are the fastest way to find your people.
One More Worth the Drive: Buffalo Comes to Huntersville
If your Northeast is western New York rather than the city, save this one. Taste of Buffalo in Huntersville was opened by Donna and Brad Battaglia, who relocated from the Buffalo area. It serves the real regional specialties: beef on weck, the roast beef sandwich on a salted caraway kimmelweck roll offered on Fridays and often sold out, plus genuine Buffalo wings, white pizza, and even Labatt.
It is north of the city, closer to a 40 minute drive from South Charlotte, so I keep it off the core map, but for a homesick Buffalonian it is worth the trip. It is a good example of how deep the authentic New York food near Charlotte scene actually runs once you count the whole state.
How I checked this list
A food list is only useful if it is current, so I did not take any of these on reputation alone. For each spot I confirmed it is open as of August 2026, checked that its reviews are strong across the major sites, and looked for a documented New York or New Jersey connection, whether an owner’s hometown or a kitchen turning out the specific regional item. A couple of well-known names that have since closed did not make the cut, which is exactly why verifying at build time matters. Hours change often at independent shops, so call ahead before a special trip.

If you want the moving-logistics side of the equation, I break down the whole transition in my guide to moving from New York City to Charlotte. It pairs well with this list: figure out the food, then figure out the neighborhood.
Why South Charlotte Eats So Northeast
This is not an accident. Roughly one in ten people in the Charlotte metro was born in the Northeast, and the South Charlotte and South Carolina border towns, Ballantyne, Waxhaw, Weddington, Fort Mill, Indian Land, and Tega Cay, have been among the fastest-growing destinations for those transplants for years. When enough New Yorkers and New Jersey families land in one place, the pizza, the bagels, and the Italian markets follow, because there is finally a crowd that knows the difference and will pay for the real thing.
That is exactly why so many of my clients come from the Northeast, and why finding authentic New York food near Charlotte is part of the relocation conversation, not an afterthought. Knowing where the community already gathers, which bakery, which bagel shop, which Sunday bar, is one of the fastest ways to feel at home in a new town. Before you commit to a house, I want to make sure it puts you near the parts of home you are not willing to give up.
If you are relocating from the Northeast, start with the town guides for the areas in this post: Ballantyne, Waxhaw, Matthews, Fort Mill, and Indian Land. If you are coming specifically from the Garden State, my guide to moving from New Jersey to Charlotte covers taxes, schools, and the trade-offs, and my buyer resources walk through the rest. Between them you can line up school zones, commute, and, yes, the nearest real slice, before you ever fly down to tour.
I cover this kind of relocation intel on my Living in South Charlotte channel too. If you are still narrowing towns, watch Moving to South Charlotte NC? Don’t Choose a Neighborhood Yet before you sign anything.
