You found a house you like in Ballantyne, the listing says 28277, and somebody has already told you that is the zip code you want for schools. It’s true that all nine Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools serving Ballantyne addresses carry a 28277 Charlotte address. It’s also true that GreatSchools rates those nine anywhere from 7 to 10 as of September 2026, and that spread includes two separate high schools, both sitting in 28277, rated 9 and 7. The zip code isn’t what decides which one you get. The street address is.
Below: the nine schools in play, where an assignment actually comes from, the one address tool the district points you to, and the boundary vote scheduled for December 8, 2026. I’m Steve Jarrell. - The lottery for this year is already closed
- What the December 8 vote could do to Ballantyne school zones

So which schools does a Ballantyne address get?
Your exact street decides it. The neighborhood name and the zip code do not. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools assigns every student to a home school by residential address. What surprises most people relocating here is where the district sends you to look it up. The “Find My School” link on the CMS home page doesn’t open a CMS page at all. It opens the Mecklenburg County GeoPortal, the county’s own property map. You type in a full street address and it returns the assigned elementary, middle and high school for that parcel.
The Short Answer
Your Ballantyne school zone is set by your street address, not your zip code, and you check it on the Mecklenburg County GeoPortal, which is where the CMS “Find My School” link sends you. Figures below checked September 20, 2026.
Key numbers, Ballantyne (28277), September 2026 (sources: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, GreatSchools, WFAE):
- 9 CMS schools serve Ballantyne addresses: 5 elementary, 2 middle, 2 high
- GreatSchools rates them from 7 to 10 out of 10
- 2 high schools in play: Ardrey Kell rated 9, Ballantyne Ridge rated 7
- The 2026-27 choice lottery closed December 5, 2025; transfers closed April 15, 2026
- CMS Board votes on new boundaries December 8, 2026
- CMS enrollment is 139,476, down 1.7 percent and the lowest since 2012
This is one of the more common places I see relocating buyers get tripped up, and it is an easy one to avoid. It is tempting to fall for a neighborhood, ask which schools it feeds, get a confident answer back, and never check it yourself. A neighborhood isn’t a boundary. These lines are drawn parcel by parcel, and one subdivision can sit on both sides of one. Run the address through the county GeoPortal before you write the offer, not after. It costs you thirty seconds, and it is the parcel-level record rather than somebody’s recollection.

Nine schools, rated 7 to 10
Nine Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools serve Ballantyne addresses, and all nine carry a 28277 Charlotte address themselves. Five are elementary, two are middle, two are high. Below is what each one is rated by GreatSchools, checked on September 20, 2026. The rating belongs to GreatSchools and you should read it the way you would read any single index: one input, not a verdict.
| School | Level | GreatSchools rating | Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ballantyne Elementary | Elementary | 8 out of 10 | 15425 Scholastic Drive |
| Elon Park Elementary | Elementary | 8 out of 10 | 11425 Ardrey Kell Road |
| Endhaven Elementary | Elementary | 9 out of 10 | 6815 Endhaven Lane |
| Polo Ridge Elementary | Elementary | 9 out of 10 | 11830 Tom Short Road |
| Hawk Ridge Elementary | Elementary | 10 out of 10 | 9201 Bryant Farms Road |
| Community House Middle | Middle | 10 out of 10 | 9500 Community House Road |
| Jay M Robinson Middle | Middle | 10 out of 10 | 5925 Ballantyne Commons Parkway |
| Ballantyne Ridge High | High | 7 out of 10 | 4004 Toringdon Way |
| Ardrey Kell High | High | 9 out of 10 | 10220 Ardrey Kell Road |
The spread inside that rating column is the whole point. Hawk Ridge Elementary, Community House Middle and Jay M Robinson Middle are each rated 10 out of 10 by GreatSchools. Ballantyne Elementary and Elon Park Elementary are each rated 8. That’s a two-point difference between elementary schools inside the same zip code, often inside the same conversation about “Ballantyne schools.”
A GreatSchools number is built mostly from test scores and growth data, and it moves year to year. It’s a reasonable first filter. It isn’t a reason to rule a street in or out on its own, and it tells you nothing about whether a particular program, a particular teacher or a particular commute will suit you. Use it to narrow, then go look.
If you’re still deciding between towns rather than streets, the county line matters as much as the boundary line does. I compared the two sides of it in Ballantyne vs Weddington, and you can see how Ballantyne prices against the higher end of the market in Marvin vs Ballantyne.
Two high schools, one zip code, rated 9 and 7
The high school assignment is where this gets expensive, because Ballantyne has two of them and they are rated differently. Ardrey Kell High at 10220 Ardrey Kell Road is rated 9 out of 10 by GreatSchools. Ballantyne Ridge High at 4004 Toringdon Way is rated 7. Both are Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Both have a 28277 address. Two houses on the same map, a few streets apart, can land on either one.
None of that makes one a good school and the other a bad one. The ratings are GreatSchools’, and they are one input. What it does mean is that “we bought in Ballantyne for the schools” isn’t a sentence that survives contact with the map. If the high school assignment is the reason you are paying a Ballantyne price, you need to know which of the two you are buying, and you need to know it before you’re under contract rather than after.
The same logic runs down through the grades. An elementary rated 10 and one rated 8 can both be close to the house you are looking at. Only one of them is yours.
The lottery for this year is already closed
If your plan was to buy anywhere in Ballantyne and then apply your way into the school you wanted, the calendar has already closed that door for 2026-27. CMS runs school choice as a fixed application window, not a rolling request, and the published key dates are specific. The choice lottery application period for 2026-27 ran from October 13, 2025 to December 5, 2025. Results went out by email between January 6 and January 16, 2026. A separate transfer and reassignment window for 2026-27 ran from March 16 to April 15, 2026.
Every one of those windows is shut. For anyone closing on a Ballantyne house this fall, the home school assignment attached to the address is your plan. That thirty-second GeoPortal check is the whole of it this year.
My read on the boundary review: don’t let it freeze you, and don’t ignore it either. The Board of Education votes on new boundaries December 8, 2026, and the final plan reaches the board on October 26. What I would do is write down the assignment you are buying today, keep a dated copy of what the GeoPortal returned with your closing file, and put October 26 on your calendar. If the plan touches your street, you’ll want to have read it before your neighbors do.

Book a 15-minute call →What the December 8 vote could do to Ballantyne school zones
This one rarely comes up on a tour. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is in the middle of redrawing boundaries district-wide right now, and it has published the schedule. Step 1 of its response to the 2024 Comprehensive Review, covering programmatic options, was voted through by the Board of Education on August 11, 2026. Step 2 is the boundaries themselves. Per the district’s comprehensive review timeline, the final boundary plan goes to the Board on October 26, 2026, a public hearing follows on November 10, 2026, and the Board votes on December 8, 2026.
Two stages come before that vote, and both are open to the public. The district has a draft boundary presentation going to the board this fall, and a community engagement round on school boundaries running alongside it. If you buy in Ballantyne this autumn, you will be a resident during that engagement round, and it is the only stretch of this process where an ordinary homeowner gets a say on where the lines land. The district lists both stages on the same timeline page as the vote dates, without fixed dates yet, so it is worth checking that page more than once between now and November.
That doesn’t mean your Ballantyne street is moving. It means the lines are open, and you should know that while you’re choosing between two houses, not after you have closed on one. My own expectation is that the addresses most exposed are the ones feeding a school that is already at or over its building capacity, because boundary work tends to follow where the seats are.
The district-level backdrop is the opposite of what most people relocating here assume. CMS enrolled 139,476 students in the most recent state count, a 1.7 percent drop and the district’s lowest enrollment since 2012, according to WFAE’s December 2025 report on state data. A shrinking district still redraws lines, because enrollment doesn’t fall evenly across a county this size. Where it falls and where it holds is what a boundary review works from.
The practical sequence for a buyer this fall is short. Check the address on the GeoPortal and save what it says with the date on it. Read the draft boundary plan when it lands on October 26. Then decide. If school assignment is one of the top two reasons you are buying in this zip code, those two steps are worth more than any amount of neighborhood reputation, and the first one takes thirty seconds. You can see how the rest of South Charlotte compares on the communities hub, and the Ballantyne community page has the market side of the picture.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ballantyne School Zones
Which schools will my address be zoned to in Ballantyne?
Whichever elementary, middle and high school Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has drawn around that parcel. Nine CMS schools serve Ballantyne addresses and they are rated from 7 to 10 by GreatSchools as of September 2026, so the assignment is worth checking before you write an offer. Type the street address into the Mecklenburg County GeoPortal, which is where the CMS “Find My School” link goes, and it returns all three assignments for that specific parcel.
How do I find out which school a house is assigned to?
Use the Mecklenburg County GeoPortal at maps.mecklenburgcountync.gov/geoportal. It is the tool the CMS home page links to under “Find My School,” it works on a full street address rather than a neighborhood name, and it takes about thirty seconds. A listing sheet, a builder brochure and a neighborhood Facebook group are all secondhand. The GeoPortal is the record.
Can Ballantyne school zones change after I buy?
Yes. CMS is running Step 2 of its response to the 2024 Comprehensive Review right now. The final boundary plan goes to the Board of Education on October 26, 2026, a public hearing follows on November 10, 2026, and the Board votes on December 8, 2026. All three dates are published on the district comprehensive review timeline, so read the plan when it reaches the board on October 26.
Is a student guaranteed a spot at the assigned home school?
A student is placed at the home school drawn around their residential address, which is why the address check matters more than any other step here. Seats at a school other than the assigned one run through the School Choice lottery or a transfer request, and neither of those is guaranteed. Full details and the current dates are on the CMS School Choice pages.
How does the CMS school choice lottery work?
You apply inside a set window, and there is no rolling request. For the 2026-27 year the lottery application period ran from October 13, 2025 to December 5, 2025, with results emailed between January 6 and January 16, 2026. A separate transfer and reassignment window for 2026-27 ran from March 16 to April 15, 2026. Every one of those windows is closed, so if you’re moving to Ballantyne in late 2026 you’re working from the home school assignment.
Does buying in a zone guarantee a seat at that school?
Buying at an address gets you that address’s assignment, and that’s the part you control. What it doesn’t do is lock the boundary in place forever, because CMS redraws lines as capacity shifts, and the current district-wide boundary review is scheduled for a Board vote on December 8, 2026. Check the assignment before you write the offer and keep a dated copy of what the GeoPortal returned.
