Monroe Expressway Toll Cost: What Your Commute Runs a Year

Published October 24, 2026

How much does the Monroe Expressway toll cost? A full-length trip costs $2.96 with NC Quick Pass in 2026, and a five-day round-trip commute from the exits between Indian Trail-Fairview Road and Morgan Mill Road runs $144.00 to $868.80 a year, according to Steve Jarrell, Team Lead of The Longleaf Group at eXp Realty, using NC Quick Pass toll calculator rates as of October 24, 2026.

If you’re weighing a house in Indian Trail or Monroe, there’s a good chance someone has told you the toll road makes the drive toward Charlotte painless and that the toll is the catch. It’s true the Monroe Expressway lets you skip U.S. 74 through Indian Trail and Monroe. What gets lost is that the toll depends almost entirely on where you get on, so your real number comes down to the exit closest to the house.

What This Guide Covers

How much is the Monroe Expressway toll right now?

The Monroe Expressway toll is $2.96 for a full-length trip with an NC Quick Pass account in 2026, and $5.92 if the toll is billed to you by mail instead. You’ll pay less than that on most commutes, because the road charges by the stretch you actually drive, and the exits closest to Charlotte cost the least.

The Short Answer

On the Monroe Expressway in Union County, you’ll pay $0.30 to $2.96 one way with NC Quick Pass in 2026, depending on the exit you get on at, per the NC Quick Pass toll calculator and NCDOT.

Key numbers, Monroe Expressway, October 2026 (sources: NC Quick Pass, NCDOT):

  • $2.96 full length with NC Quick Pass, $5.92 by toll invoice, since January 1, 2026
  • $0.30 one way from Exit 257, Indian Trail-Fairview Road, to U.S. 74 near I-485
  • $1.52 one way from Exit 264, U.S. 601, or $729.60 a year on a five-day round-trip commute
  • The same toll at every hour of the day
  • Full length was $2.85 in 2024 and $2.92 in 2025

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority runs the road, and NCDOT describes it as an all-electronic toll road extending 18 miles from U.S. 74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County to U.S. 74 between Wingate and Marshville in Union County. It opened on November 27, 2018. There are no toll booths. The Turnpike Authority’s Monroe Expressway operations report says its free-flow toll zones sit on the mainline between all interchanges, so your trip is charged zone by zone as you pass through at highway speed.

That zone-by-zone setup is why a single price misleads. The NC Quick Pass toll calculator lists seven zones in each direction, and as of October 24, 2026 they run from $0.22 for the short hop between Unionville-Indian Trail Road and Rocky River Road to $0.66 between Morgan Mill Road and Austin Chaney Road. Add up the zones you cross and you have your toll. Someone getting on at the Indian Trail end and heading toward Charlotte crosses one or two zones. Someone starting at the far east end near Wingate crosses all seven.

If you’re comparing a house near U.S. 601 in Monroe with one closer to Indian Trail, I’d put the toll in the monthly budget the same way you’d put in an HOA payment. From U.S. 601 a round trip is $3.04 with NC Quick Pass, so a five-day commute comes to about $61 a month. On its own it’s a small line next to a mortgage payment, but it’s a real one, and it doubles if the bill comes in the mail.

What does the Monroe Expressway toll cost a commuter a year?

A five-day Monroe Expressway commute toward Charlotte costs $144.00 a year from Exit 257, Indian Trail-Fairview Road, and $868.80 a year from Exit 266, Morgan Mill Road, with NC Quick Pass. Those figures assume a round trip to the western end at U.S. 74 near I-485, five days a week for 48 weeks, at the October 24, 2026 rates in the NC Quick Pass toll calculator.

Here’s every entry point priced the same way. The two-day column is there for a hybrid schedule, because the toll only counts the days you drive.

Monroe Expressway toll by entry exit, westbound to U.S. 74 near I-485, NC Quick Pass, Class 1 vehicle, rates as of October 24, 2026 (source: NC Quick Pass toll calculator). Yearly figures are round trips over 48 weeks.
Where you get onOne wayRound trip2 days a week, a year5 days a week, a year
Exit 257, Indian Trail-Fairview Road$0.30$0.60$57.60$144.00
Exit 259, Unionville-Indian Trail Road$0.66$1.32$126.72$316.80
Exit 260, N. Rocky River Road$0.88$1.76$168.96$422.40
Exit 264, U.S. 601$1.52$3.04$291.84$729.60
Exit 266, Morgan Mill Road$1.81$3.62$347.52$868.80
Exit 270, Austin Chaney Road$2.47$4.94$474.24$1,185.60
Exit 273, U.S. 74 East (full length)$2.96$5.92$568.32$1,420.80

A quick guide to where those exits are, because the names won’t mean much yet. Exit 259, Unionville-Indian Trail Road, sits inside the Town of Indian Trail. Exits 264 and 266 (U.S. 601 and Morgan Mill Road) sit inside Monroe, with Exit 260 (N. Rocky River Road) between them and Indian Trail. U.S. 601 runs north and south through Monroe. Exit 273 is the far east end, where the expressway rejoins U.S. 74 between Wingate and Marshville.

So the Indian Trail side of the road is where the toll barely registers. From Unionville-Indian Trail Road you pay $0.66 each way, or $316.80 a year if you drive it every weekday. Move to a house near U.S. 601 and the same five-day habit costs $729.60. That’s $412.80 more a year for the Monroe address, before you count anything else about the two houses.

The reverse trip costs the same. The toll calculator charges the same amount for each zone eastbound and westbound, so the drive home from Charlotte matches the drive in. That’s one thing that makes this road easier to budget than the express lanes on I-485, which the next section gets into.

Monroe expressway toll cost by exit in 2026: $0. 30 one way from exit 257 indian trail-fairview road to $2. 96 full length with nc quick pass, $144. 00 to $1,420. 80 a year on a five-day round-trip commute

Does the toll change at rush hour?

No. The Monroe Expressway toll is the same at 7:30 on a Tuesday morning as it is at midnight on a Sunday. The NC Quick Pass toll calculator prices this road with one rate per zone and asks you only for a vehicle class, while it asks for a travel time and a day of the week only on the I-485 Express Lanes.

That matters if you’re comparing a Monroe or Indian Trail address with one in Ballantyne or Matthews. The I-485 Express Lanes price each segment by the hour and the day, so one segment, Westinghouse Boulevard to Johnston Road, costs $2.50 at 4 PM midweek and $0.60 after 8 PM with NC Quick Pass. We walked through those numbers in our I-485 toll breakdown for Ballantyne and Matthews. On the Monroe Expressway, the price you see at 2 PM is the price you’ll pay at 5 PM.

What does move is the rate itself, once a year. NCDOT calls it the annual toll rate increase, and it has taken effect on January 1 in each of the last two years. In 2025 the full-length NC Quick Pass trip went from $2.85 to $2.92, per NCDOT’s December 30, 2024 release. On January 1, 2026 it went from $2.92 to $2.96, according to NCDOT’s December 30, 2025 release.

NCDOT says the money is used to pay off the bonds sold to build the road and to run and maintain it. For your budget, the practical read is simple. Price the commute at this year’s rate, then expect a few cents more per full trip each January rather than a flat number for as long as you own the house.

NC Quick Pass or a toll invoice in the mail?

Get the NC Quick Pass account, because the Monroe Expressway charges double when the toll is billed to you by mail. NC Quick Pass says customers who pay through a toll invoice pay double the NC Quick Pass toll rate, and the toll calculator shows it zone by zone: the full-length trip is $2.96 with an account and $5.92 by invoice.

On a commute, that gap adds up fast. A five-day round trip from U.S. 601 costs $729.60 a year with NC Quick Pass and $1,459.20 by invoice. From Unionville-Indian Trail Road it’s $316.80 against $633.60. Nothing about the drive changes. You’re only paying for the way the bill reaches you.

Before you write an offer on a house where the commute leans on the expressway, I’d drive it twice at the hour you’d actually leave: once on the Monroe Expressway and once on U.S. 74 through Indian Trail. Then I’d open the NC Quick Pass account the week you close, because a full-length round trip billed by mail is $11.84 instead of $5.92.

Setting up the account is quick. According to NC Quick Pass account options, a personal account covers up to ten vehicles with a $10 prepaid balance for the first two. The NC Only account needs no transponder at all, though it only works on North Carolina toll roads. If you’d like a transponder you can use out of state, NC Quick Pass says its transponders work in 23 states, and NCDOT’s 2026 rate release says you can buy a Transponder on the Go for $3 at Harris Teeter, Amazon and some 7-Eleven, Speedway and License Plate Agency locations.

If you skip the account and then miss an invoice, the costs climb. The NC Quick Pass fee schedule adds a $6.00 processing fee on the second invoice, a $25.00 civil penalty on the third, and after an unpaid fourth invoice you’re subject to a DMV vehicle registration hold and collections. A $1.52 toll is easy to forget. A registration hold isn’t.

Is the Monroe Expressway toll worth paying?

For a Monroe commuter heading toward Charlotte, the toll buys a bypass of U.S. 74 through both Monroe and Indian Trail. For an Indian Trail commuter, it’s cheap but it covers only a few miles. The deciding detail is where the expressway ends: at U.S. 74 near I-485, per NCDOT, not in Uptown Charlotte.

That ending point changes the math. Every commuter who takes the expressway west still finishes the trip on U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard, which runs from Matthews into Uptown) or on I-485, the loop around Charlotte. The toll buys you a way around the U.S. 74 traffic through Monroe and Indian Trail. It doesn’t buy you anything past that point.

NCDOT’s own figure gives a sense of the scale. Its Turnpike page for the road says drivers going from Marshville to Matthews have a projected time savings of about 20 minutes. That’s a full-length trip, the $2.96 one. Get on closer to Charlotte and you skip less of the old road, which is why the toll is smaller too. The price and the time saved shrink together.

The free alternative is always there. The expressway was built alongside U.S. 74, and NCDOT says it was designed to allow high-speed regional travel while keeping access to the properties along the existing road. Nobody has to pay a toll to live in Monroe or Indian Trail. The question is whether the minutes are worth the money on the days you drive.

Here’s the tradeoff. A house near U.S. 601 gives you a $1.52 toll each way and bypasses U.S. 74 through both towns. A house near Unionville-Indian Trail Road means a $0.66 toll each way and bypasses less of it, because you’re already near the western end. Our guide to Monroe neighborhoods covers the communities there and how the expressway figures into their commute, and our Indian Trail to Charlotte commute guide covers the drive times on the free routes.

If you’re still deciding between the two towns, the toll is one input among many. Our Monroe community page and the South Charlotte communities hub line the towns up on price, taxes and schools.

There are no booths to stop at. In 2026 a full-length trip costs $2.96 with NC Quick Pass, and U.S. 74 itself remains the free route through Indian Trail and Monroe.

How do you pay the Monroe Expressway toll?

You pay through an NC Quick Pass account, which saves 50% on North Carolina tolls, or by a toll invoice mailed to the address on the vehicle’s registration at double the rate. As of October 2026, an NC Quick Pass account needs a $10 prepaid balance for the first two vehicles, and the NC Only account needs no transponder.

Where is the Monroe Expressway?

The Monroe Expressway runs east and west through Union County, about 18 miles from U.S. 74 near I-485 to U.S. 74 between Wingate and Marshville, per NCDOT. The NC Quick Pass toll calculator numbers its exits 255 to 273. Exit 259, Unionville-Indian Trail Road, sits in Indian Trail, and Exit 264, U.S. 601, sits in Monroe.

Does the Monroe Expressway toll change during rush hour?

No. As of October 2026 the Monroe Expressway charges one rate per toll zone at every hour, unlike the I-485 Express Lanes, which price by time of day and day of the week. What happens if you don’t pay a toll in North Carolina?

Per NC Quick Pass, an unpaid toll invoice adds a $6.00 processing fee on the second invoice and a $25.00 civil penalty on the third, and after an unpaid fourth invoice the vehicle is subject to a DMV registration hold and the balance goes to collections. NC Quick Pass also says an account holder can get a mailed invoice if a negative balance deactivates the transponder, so keep the prepaid balance funded.
