What’s the Weddington NC Property Tax Rate? 3 Rates, 2 Bills

Published November 3, 2026

What is the property tax rate in Weddington NC? For the 2026-27 tax year a Weddington home in the Wesley Chapel fire district pays 50.09 cents per $100 of assessed value, made up of Union County’s 43.42 cents, the Wesley Chapel fire district’s 3.17 cents and the Town of Weddington’s 3.5 cents, which comes to about $5,958 a year on the town’s $1,189,434 median sale price for July to September 2026, according to Steve Jarrell, Team Lead of The Longleaf Group at eXp Realty, working from Union County’s 2026-2027 rate sheets and the Redfin Data Center.

If you looked up the Weddington NC property tax rate on the town’s website, you probably came away with 3.5 cents and a nice surprise. It’s true that the town’s own rate is small. It’s also one of three rates, and they arrive on two separate bills, one from Union County and one from the town. This guide walks through all three, what a Weddington home pays in a year, why the town rate went up when the county’s came down, and where your mailing address can steer you wrong. I’m Steve Jarrell, and I live and sell homes in Weddington.

What This Guide Covers

What is the Weddington NC property tax rate for 2026-27?

You’ll pay 50.09 cents for every $100 of assessed value on a Weddington home this tax year, in three rates. Union County charges 43.42 cents, the Wesley Chapel fire district adds 3.17 cents, and the Town of Weddington adds 3.5 cents, per the county’s 2026-2027 tax rate and fire district sheets. North Carolina taxes your home at its assessed value, which Union County last reset in its January 2025 reappraisal.

The Short Answer

Your Weddington property tax rate for 2026-27 is 50.09 cents per $100 of assessed value across three rates, billed in two pieces: Union County collects 46.59 cents for the county and the Wesley Chapel fire district, and the Town of Weddington bills its 3.5 cents separately.

Key numbers, Weddington NC, 2026-27 tax year (sources: Union County, Town of Weddington, Redfin Data Center):

  • Union County: 43.42 cents per $100
  • Wesley Chapel fire district: 3.17 cents per $100
  • Town of Weddington: 3.5 cents per $100, on its own bill
  • All three: 50.09 cents, about $5,958 a year on the $1,189,434 median sale from July to September 2026
  • Same assessed value inside Matthews at 77.22 cents: about $9,185 a year (Mecklenburg values date to 2023)

Union County’s 43.42 cents is the big piece, and most of it goes to schools. The county’s sheet splits it into five funds, and 26.78 cents for education operating plus 3.89 cents for education debt make 30.67 of the 43.42 cents. The fire district rate pays for fire protection, and the town says the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department serves Weddington. The town rate pays for the town itself, which I’ll come back to below.

If you’re budgeting for a Weddington house, plan on the 50.09 cent number, not the 3.5 cents on the town’s website. The town’s rate is a thin slice of that total. On the $1,189,434 median sale from July to September 2026, it comes to about $416 of a roughly $5,958 yearly total, and the county and fire district carry the rest on a separate bill.

Why does a Weddington home get two tax bills?

You get two bills because two governments collect. The town’s tax page says it plainly: “Weddington residents pay both city and county property taxes. You will receive separate bills.” Union County bills the county rate and the fire district rate together, and the Town of Weddington bills its 3.5 cents on its own.

You can see the split on any county record. On Union County’s Property Tax Inquiry, the 2026 records for Weddington’s town hall and for three Weddington homes, north and south of town, each show a tax rate of 0.4659. That’s 46.59 cents: the county’s 43.42 plus the Wesley Chapel fire district’s 3.17. The town’s 3.5 cents isn’t on that record, so add it yourself.

Weddington’s 2026-27 property tax: 43. 42 cents union county, 3. 17 cents wesley chapel fire district and 3. 5 cents town, 50. 09 cents per $100 on two bills

Both bills run on the same calendar. Union County’s 2026 bills are due September 1, 2026, and can be paid without interest through January 5, 2027, per its 2026 bill notice. The town gives the same January 5, 2027 date, and on January 6 it adds a 2 percent penalty, then three-fourths of a percent each month after.

Here’s where escrow can trip you up. If your lender escrows your taxes, the county mails the bill to the lender when the lender asks for it and sends you a courtesy statement. The town takes a different line: “If your taxes are escrowed through your mortgage, you will not receive a copy of the Weddington bill.” So if you never see a town bill, that’s expected, and it’s worth confirming your escrow pays both.

What does a Weddington home pay in property tax a year?

On Weddington’s median sale price of $1,189,434 for July to September 2026, from the Redfin Data Center, the 2026-27 rates come to about $5,958 a year, or about $496 a month. About $5,542 of that is the county bill and about $416 is the town bill.

Weddington total50.09$5,957.87
Inside Matthews, county and town77.22$9,184.81
Inside Charlotte, county and city78.57$9,345.38

Same value, very different bills. Inside Matthews, Mecklenburg County’s 2026-27 rate chart puts the county and town rate at 77.22 cents, so the same $1,189,434 value would pay about $9,185, or about $3,227 more than in Weddington. Inside Charlotte, at 78.57 cents, it would pay about $9,345.

That comparison holds the assessed value equal. Mecklenburg last reappraised in 2023 and Union County in 2025, so a Matthews house can carry an assessed value below its sale price. The state’s 2025-26 effective rates, which adjust for that gap, put the county and town rate at 68.56 cents in Matthews against 46.85 in Weddington, before Weddington’s fire district rate.

If the Weddington median is well above your budget, scale it: at 50.09 cents, every $100,000 of assessed value adds about $501 a year. A $1,000,000 assessed value pays about $5,009.

Why did Weddington’s town rate go up when the county’s came down?

Weddington’s town rate rose from 2.5 cents in 2024-25 to 3.5 cents in 2025-26 because the 3.5 cents now includes the solid waste fee the town used to bill on its own; on the reappraised values, its budget put the rate without that fee at 1.72 cents. In the same year, Union County cut its rate from 58.80 cents to 43.42 cents, per the North Carolina Department of Revenue’s 2024-25 and 2025-26 rate tables.

The county cut came with the reappraisal. Union County’s 2025 reappraisal raised total residential value 63.45 percent and its median home value from $293,377 to $403,000, per the county’s reappraisal page. When values jump that much, a lower rate can raise about the same money.

Weddington did that math too. Its fiscal 2026 proposed budget works out that 1.72 cent revenue neutral rate on the new values, then a 3.5 cent rate under the heading “REVENUE NEUTRAL & INCLUDE TRASH.” Until then the town had charged a separate solid waste fee, which brought in $1,209,280 in fiscal 2025. Now the town’s tax page says, “The Solid Waste Fee is included in the tax rate.”

You can see the swap in the budget lines. In fiscal 2025, with a 2.5 cent rate, the town took in $920,115 in property tax and $1,209,280 in solid waste fees. For fiscal 2027, the adopted budget counts on $1,895,250 from property tax and has no solid waste revenue line at all.

So the higher town rate didn’t add a new service. It moved an existing charge onto the tax bill. That has one practical effect for a buyer: the trash cost now rises and falls with your home’s assessed value instead of sitting on its own line.

Weddington sits in Union County, but plenty of buyers are also pricing the Mecklenburg side of the line. Our Living in South Charlotte guide breaks down what Mecklenburg County property taxes look like for 2027 if you want the other half of that comparison.

What does the town’s 3.5 cents pay for?

The 3.5 cents raises about $1.9 million, and two budget lines, trash collection and the sheriff’s contract, add up to nearly that much. Weddington’s 2026-2027 budget ordinance, adopted June 8, 2026, appropriates $3,160,000 and levies 3.5 cents to raise $1,895,250 of it, about 60 percent. Most of the rest comes from state-collected revenues, budgeted at $1,033,750.

The town’s proposed 2027 budget shows the big lines. Solid waste is budgeted at $1,114,200, and police protection at $758,115. That police line is the town’s contract with the Union County Sheriff’s Office, which provides five officers with 24-hour coverage, per the town’s police services page. The budget message says the sheriff contract reflects a 13.3 percent increase.

Put those two lines together and they come to $1,872,315, close to the $1,895,250 the town expects from property tax. Fire service sits on the other bill: the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department serves the town, paid through the fire district rate on the county bill.

That’s why the town rate stays small. Waxhaw, by comparison, charges 29 cents and Monroe 44 cents, per the county’s 2026-2027 sheet, and Waxhaw runs its own police department of 34 full-time officers, per the Waxhaw Police Department. That’s the trade: a small town bill and five contracted sheriff’s officers with 24-hour coverage, where Waxhaw’s 29 cents pays for a department of its own. If you’re weighing Weddington against those towns, my Union County property tax guide lines up Weddington against Marvin, Indian Trail, Waxhaw and Monroe.

If you escrow your taxes, I’d ask your lender one question before you close on a Weddington house: is the town bill in the escrow? The town says escrowed owners won’t receive a copy of its bill. On a home at Weddington’s median sale price that bill is about $416 a year, small enough to miss, and if it goes unpaid the town adds a 2 percent penalty on January 6.

Does a Matthews or Waxhaw address change your tax rate?

No, your mailing address doesn’t set your rate; the town limits do. A listing inside the town can say Matthews or Waxhaw. The Census Bureau’s 2020 ZIP code to place file puts about 73 percent of Weddington’s land in ZIP 28104 and about 27 percent in 28173.

On the county’s own records, Weddington homes inside the town limits carry addresses like “Matthews NC 28104” and “Waxhaw NC 28173.” Neither ZIP stops at the town line: only about 43 percent of 28104’s land and about 4 percent of 28173’s sit inside Weddington. A house with the same ZIP code can sit outside the town and skip the 3.5 cent town bill.

The ZIP crosses the county line, too. The Census file puts parts of 28104 in Matthews and Charlotte as well as Stallings, Indian Trail, Wesley Chapel and Hemby Bridge, so a “Matthews NC 28104” listing can sit in Mecklenburg County at 77 cents or more. If you’re comparing a Weddington house with one across the county line, my Weddington vs Matthews comparison works through that trade.

One date to keep in mind: the state lists Union County’s next reappraisal for 2029, per the NC Department of Revenue’s 2026-27 county rate table. For the 2026 tax year, the county said it would send a new value notice only when a property changed, such as new construction, an addition or a rezoning. For how the rest of South Charlotte compares, start with the South Charlotte communities hub.

Before you write an offer, pull the parcel on Union County’s Property Tax Inquiry. If the rate reads 0.4659 and the address sits inside the town limits, plan on 50.09 cents. Ask the town whether a parcel near the edge is inside the limits, because that’s what decides the town bill. Frequently Asked Questions About the Weddington NC Property Tax Rate

What is the property tax rate in Weddington NC?

A Weddington home in the Wesley Chapel fire district pays 50.09 cents per $100 of assessed value for the 2026-27 tax year, made up of Union County’s 43.42 cents, the Wesley Chapel fire district’s 3.17 cents and the Town of Weddington’s 3.5 cents, which comes to about $5,958 a year on the town’s $1,189,434 median sale price for July to September 2026, according to Steve Jarrell, Team Lead of The Longleaf Group at eXp Realty, working from Union County’s 2026-2027 rate sheets and the Redfin Data Center.

Is Weddington NC in Union County?

Yes. Weddington is a town in Union County, and the town says Union County does all of its property assessments. For 2026-27 its homes pay Union County’s 43.42 cent rate plus the town’s 3.5 cents, and homes in the Wesley Chapel fire district also pay its 3.17 cents on the county bill. Weddington homes can carry Matthews or Waxhaw mailing addresses, which don’t change the county.

Why do I get two property tax bills in Weddington?

Because two governments collect. Union County bills its 43.42 cent rate and the 3.17 cent Wesley Chapel fire district rate together, 46.59 cents for 2026-27, and the Town of Weddington sends its own bill for 3.5 cents. If your mortgage lender escrows your taxes, the town says you won’t receive a copy of the Weddington bill.

Who is the Weddington NC tax collector?

The Town of Weddington collects its own 3.5 cent tax at Town Hall, 1924 Weddington Road, phone 704-846-2709, extension 4, and takes payment in person, by drop box, by mail or online. Union County’s Tax Administration Office collects the county and fire district taxes. For the 2026 bills, both can be paid without interest or penalty through January 5, 2027.

How much is property tax on a $1 million home in Weddington?

About $5,009 a year at 2026-27 rates, if the home is inside the town limits and the Wesley Chapel fire district and assessed at $1,000,000: $4,342 to Union County, $317 in fire district tax and $350 to the town. The same assessed value inside Matthews would pay about $7,722 at its combined 77.22 cent rate.

When will Weddington property values be reappraised?

The NC Department of Revenue lists Union County’s next reappraisal for 2029. The last one took effect January 1, 2025, and raised the county’s median home value from $293,377 to $403,000. For the 2026 tax year, the county said it would send a new value notice only when a property changed, such as new construction, an addition or a rezoning.
